Shocking Ways to Save Money on Your Electric Bill

by Advance Financial | July 16th, 2019

The temperature is going up but your utility bills don’t have to. Keep your A/C on and your bill low with these cool and easy tips to save energy (and cash) this summer.

Here’s a bright idea.

Replace your regular light bulbs with LED bulbs

The average incandescent light bulb only lasts between 1 – 2 years, while LED bulbs last around 11. LED light bulbs also use less energy than a typical light bulb, saving you an average of $13 a year.

Keep it chill AND lower your bill.

Change out your HVAC filter regularly.

Whether it’s monthly, bimonthly or just four times a year, replacing your HVAC filter can reduce your energy bill by 7.5% every month. Also, buying filters in bulk instead of individually can cut down the cost. Make sure to check measurements before you buy.

Switch it up!

Reverse the rotation of your ceiling fan.

Fun fact: You can set your ceiling fan to turn clockwise or counterclockwise. In the winter make sure to set the fan to clockwise — this pulls the warm air up and redistributes it. For the summer, run your fan counterclockwise and it’ll push the air down for a cooling effect. Saving 15% on your cooling/heating costs is easy — watch this video to get started.

What’s cooler than being cool?

Wash your clothes on cold.

Unless someone is sick or you’re washing soiled items, it is perfectly fine to wash everything on cold (yes, that includes whites!). Switch to cold water when you do laundry and you’ll be saving $60 a year with the push of a button.

Pull the plug on “phantom energy” costs.

Unplug what you’re not using.

Whether it’s a toaster, your laptop/phone charger or game console, not using it can cost you. Even when your electronics are turned off, if they’re plugged in they’re using “phantom energy” and adding an extra $30 to your monthly electric bill. Try using a surge protector to make unplugging easier.

These small changes can lead to big savings. Summer won’t last forever, but don’t worry. You can use these tips all year round.
