Making the Most of Your Tax-Free Weekend

by Advance Financial | July 18th, 2019

It’s like Christmas in July or your birthday for three days straight. July 26-28 is tax-free weekend in Tennessee — the long-awaited weekend to purchase clothing and back to school items without paying taxes. But there are lots of ins-and-outs you may not be aware of and things you can do to prepare. Here’s our guide to getting the most out of your tax-free weekend:

  • Know what is tax-free and what isn’t. At www.tn.gov, you can find an entire list of all tax- exempt items. These lists have detailed descriptions of the essentials so you can avoid any problems at the register. In addition to back-to-school necessities, there are some items like diapers and bibs that may be good to stock up on this weekend.
  • Try on clothes and shoes you may want to purchase earlier in the week. Not only does this make it easier to plan your budget, but knowing exactly what size you need means you don’t have to waste time trying clothes on before you buy.
  • Set your budget. Now that you know what you want, you can plan on how much you’re going to spend. Write out how much you’re going to spend on clothes and supplies, then split the cost per item.
  • Another helpful tip is to bring cash with you. If you only have the amount of cash in your budget with you, then you can’t be tempted to spend more than that.
  • Lastly, try to do your shopping as early as possible. Like the holiday season or Black Friday, things may be picked over if you wait until the last minute. Going on Friday or Saturday will give you the best chance of getting all the items on your list.

It doesn’t matter if you’re shopping at Opry Mills, Hamilton Place or West Town mall, tax-free weekend is guaranteed to be chaotic. But, following these tips can help keep you on time and on budget so you can get the biggest bang for your buck this tax-free weekend.
